May 1, 2012, Calamba City – In commemoration of the 109th International Labor Day, an estimated 2,500 people led by Pagkakaisa ng mga Manggagawa sa Timog Katagalugan-Kilusang Mayo Uno (PAMANTIK-KMU) together with its allied labor and transport groups, and other progressive organizations, staged a demonstration at Calamba City calling for better wages, the right to unionize and the improvement of working conditions.

The protesters from Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite among others marched all the way from different assembly areas and converged at Crossing, Calamba where the program was held. Pictures of Karl Marx, Mao Zedong, Vladimir Lenin, Friedrich Engels, and Joseph Stalin- the five great proletarian leaders, were paraded and placed at the stage. More than 350 workers riding in motorcycles also highlighted the march to Calamba.

In his speech, PAMANTIK-KMU spokesperson, Herminiano Marasigan shared the beginnings of May Day, emphasizing the importance of joined labor force in its history and how workers all over the world continue to celebrate this day.

One of the main concerns of the celebration is the unceasing call for the Php 125 across the board wage increase that President Aquino still refuses to grant. Speakers from different groups stressed the need of the wage increase because of the continuing rise of prices of commodities and services.

Glen Malabanan, Secretary General of human rights group KARAPATAN-ST, said that one of the major human rights violations that workers experience is the repression on organizing and forming unions. She even pointed out the killing of Diosdado “Ka Fort” Fortuna and Celito Baccay as an example of human rights violations against workers.

Gabriela-ST Secretary General Rona Jane Manalo, spoke of discriminations that women workers are still experiencing today. “The government do not see the true capabilities of women workers and their possible contributions in the labor force,” she added.

The celebration in Calamba City was joined by different labor groups such as Alyansa ng Manggagawa sa Probinsya at Industriya sa Laguna (ALMAPILA), Alyansa ng Manggagawa sa Enklabo (AMEN), Garments and Textiles Labor Alliance (GATELA) and Kaisahan ng mga Manggagawang Iligal na Tinanggal (KAMIT) among others.

Upon the end of the program, a letter from the Revolutionary Council of Trade Unions (RCTU), was read to the audience. It spoke of the lives and contributions to the people’s struggle of Rechel Tanteo, a garments worker who joined the New People’s Army. She and boyfriend Rodel Peñamante, were killed in an encounter with the military last April 20.

Cultural groups Kulturang Ugnayan ng Makabayang Sining Anakpawis (KUMASA) and Southern Tagalog Cultural Network (STCN) as well as The Axel Pinpin Propaganda Machine, staged performances that kept the crowd lively and upbeat despite the rain that came later that day.

With the theme “Labanan ang tumitinding epekto ng krisis ng imperyalistang globalisasyon sa manggagawa at mamamayang Pilipino. Ipagtanggol at isulong ang pakikibaka para sa kabuhayan at katarungang panlipunan” the workers of Southern Tagalog vowed to continue their fight for their rights and to never waver in asserting their calls for better wages, better working conditions and better employment situation.

Allied organizations of PAMANTIK-KMU also held simultaneous demonstrations in Cavite, Rizal and other provinces of the Southern Tagalog region. According to Marasigan, an estimated total of 6,000 workers and supporters, including those in Calamba City, participated in the May 1 celebration all over the region.

Remembering Eden and Eddie

On April 21, 2003, two prominent activists from the Philippines’ Southern Tagalog Region, Eden Marcellana and Eddie Gumanoy, along with nine other members of a human rights quick response team (QRT) were abducted by suspected military men in the Island of Mindoro.

Eden was then the secretary general of human rights group Karapatan – Southern Tagalog, and Eddie was the chairperson of the regional peasant alliance, Kasama-TK. The next day, their bodies were found, bearing signs of brutal torture. The other abducted members of the QRT, including STeXposure co-founder King Catoy, survived the incident.

Suspected to have masterminded the atrocity is retired Army general Jovito Palparan, who at the time served as colonel and commander of the 204th Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army stationed in Mindoro. He earned the moniker “Berdugo ng Mindoro” (The Butcher of Mindoro) as early as 2001 for allegedly orchestrating the killing of several activists in the island.

Eden and Eddie were staunch critics of Palparan as well as the government’s counter insurgency program which they believed has only caused grave human rights violations.

On the day when their bodies were found, Eden was set to testify before the commission of appointments to protest Palparan’s impending promotion as Army general.

Nine years have passed, and despite several investigations by government, non-government, local and foreign institutions,  no one has ever been convicted nor arrested for the killing of Eden and Eddie.

Palparan, who would be accused of committing more heinous crimes until the end of, or perhaps even after, his military career, remain free. This, despite the issuance of an arrest warrant for his involvement in the disappearance of two student activists in 2006.

Justice for Eden and Eddie, justice for all victims of human rights violations.

KMP – Laguna chief abducted, missing; Surface Ka Alex Arias, P-Noy, AFP told

PRESS RELEASE: 12 April 2012

The militant peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and the Katipunan ng mga Samahang Magbubukid sa Timog Katagalugan (Kasama-TK) today condemned the abduction of its provincial chairperson and demanded the Aquino government and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to immediately surface Alex Arias, chairperson of the Pagkakaisa’t Ugnayan ng mga Magsasaka sa Laguna (PUMALAG – KMP), who was abducted by suspected state security forces last April 7.

Reports reaching the KMP national office state that Arias, 56, was driving a motorcycle on his way home to Liliw, Laguna last Saturday when blocked by armed men in Barangay (village) Bubukal in Sta. Cruz town. The armed men, believed to be elements of the 1st Infantry Battalion – Philippine Army were riding a van also escorted by a number of motorcycles.

“We vehemently condemn this latest attack by the Aquino government and state security forces against peasant leaders. We demand Aquino and the AFP to immediately surface Ka Alex,” says KMP deputy secretary general Randall Echanis.

Echanis said “the enforced disappearance of Ka Alex clearly demonstrates the Aquino government’s continuing attacks against farmers demanding their rights to the lands.”

Local residents in Barangay Tuy Baanan in Liliw, Laguna where Arias is residing testified that the military have been looking for him since the Philippine Army put up a detachment in the village last month.

“Ka Alex is an active peasant leader in the region. Being the chairperson of PUMALAG, he is also a member of the regional council of Kasama-TK and the national council of KMP,” according to Axel Pinpin, secretary general of Kasama-TK.

Pinpin, a political detainee during the administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, stressed that illegal arrest and detention is still continuing in the country under the Oplan Bayanihan of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

“There is no reason for us to doubt that the state elements are involved in the illegal arrest and disappearance of Ka Alex. We will not be surprised if later on they will be presenting Ka Alex to the media as another top-ranking official of the New People’s Army carrying guns and explosives,” Pinpin added.
